SOIL
COVID 19-RESPONSE
As reported in the New York Times and the BBC concerns are mounting as to how the coronavirus crisis will unfold in Haiti in the coming weeks and months. COVID-19 is devastating health systems that are far more prepared and resilient than Haiti’s which are under-resourced and already overwhelmed. For most families the best options for prevention- social distancing, stocking up on essentials, etc.- are simply not available. There is much reason to fear that those who have the least will suffer the most.
When staying home is a critical way to help save lives, the importance of universal access to safe household sanitation is clearer than ever. The continued provision of SOIL’s lifesaving sanitation services requires that waste collection, transport, and treatment services remain operational without interruption. SOIL has secured authorization as an essential service and is implementing plans that will enable them to continue to operate safely.
Pennywise is proud of our multi-year relationship with SOIL both because of the critical services they provide and the strategic, sustainable way in which they provide them. SOIL is stepping up to offer fundamental services when they are most needed. We are more committed to supporting them than ever.

Since building Haiti’s first EcoSan toilet and waste treatment facility, SOIL has gone on to become one of the country’s most well-respected sanitation providers. SOIL is sustainably providing over 700 households with dignified, in-home sanitation for less than $5 USD per household per month. SOIL’s EcoSan waste treatment facilities treat more than 360 tons of human waste annually. By converting human wastes into rich compost, SOIL’s work aims to create meaningful livelihood opportunities throughout the ecological sanitation cycle, empowering people and restoring ecosystems. This holistic approach to sanitation ensures that SOIL is creating a truly sustainable sanitation system that creates economic livelihood opportunities at every point in the sanitation chain while transforming a public health problem into an environmental resource.
SOIL’s goals and outcomes correspond precisely to virtually all of the Pennywise priorities. We are excited to support this paradigm-shifting work.
