ipatse futures
Pennywise has partnered with Michael Heckenberger (Associate Professor, University of Florida) to create a proposal for sustainable management of the village of Ipatse in the southern Brazilian Amazon. Dr. Heckenberger has spent more than 25 years living and working with indigenous peoples in the Amazon, particularly the Kuikuro of the Xingu Indigenous Territory (TIX). The Ipatse Futures Project seeks to preserve the traditions of the Kuikuro by protecting the ecosystem on which they rely and providing economic opportunity and incentive in the process.
The PW technical assistance and planning program will provide ongoing support to improving the organizational infrastructure and overall capacity of the Ipatse Futures project. By creating formal partnerships between indigenous organizations, local government and foundations, PW will help to ensure sustainability for generations to come.
